The Presence of Doubt
George Meredith wrote in ‘Modern Love ‘in 1882 “Ah, what a dusty answer gets the soul/When hot for certainties in this our life”. Whilst some of the more important elements of life might have seemed riddled with uncertainty to him, he would at least have had been spared the universal suggestion of doubt that is increasingly prevalent in today’s emerging speech patterns. The ‘high rising terminals’ of teen speak – turning every utterance into a question – are spreading far beyond the teenagers in the pursuit of cool. Very distressing to one who’s family motto is ‘Often wrong, but never in doubt’. Taylor Mali’s wonderful Poem ‘Totally, like, whatever, you know?‘ a beautifully observed and witty piece on this theme, and it’s like toottally brought to life by the graphics in this video. Innit!

Sorry Sue, I couldn’t resist!
