    Wot’s Jock for Schadenfreude ?

  • 19 / Jun / 2010    Alan Partridge

    Q. “Wot’s Jock for Schadenfreude”

    A. “Blàr Allt a’ Bhonnaich” i.e. Bannockburn.

In December 1745, some 431 years later, they turned up at the Baseball Ground in Derby hoping to win the “2nd leg” too. The fixture was arranged for Boxing Day but they refused to play citing that, “it will leave us insufficient time to be away back hame for the Hogmanay Swally(piss-up)” UEFA then ruled that they had to play the 2nd leg at home the following spring. The rest, as they say, is History!

They took one look at Derby and thought **** this for a game of soldiers, leave it England, that Hannoverian slut just ain’t worth it and as you say, returned home for the piss up.

If I could just revert to analytical mode for just a moment. As much as I blame Capello’s selections and formations, the players too must bear huge responsibility. It’s heavily suggested not all is well in the camp, that manager and players don’t seem eye to eye. Well after Sven & the hapless McClaren where the players were running the show, with celebrity parties before flying off, the Wags in the hotel etc, the FA wanted to nip all that in the bud; so they brought in the stern headmaster Capello, who bans mobile fans, has all the players sitting together at dinner and no Wags, in trying to instil some professionalism and discipline into the players. And these pampered stars react and rebel because it makes them have to toe the line rather than have their every whim indulged? Wayne Rooney, the supposed one player still in touch with his roots, summed up the players’ arrogance with his to camera complaint about his supporters having the temerity to boo him. A world class player showing he has absolutely no class whatsoever. He has neither backed up his reputation on the pitch or off it.
